Nothing makes it clearer that America is not a democracy or a democratic republic than...

Our ballot access laws.  If a Libertarian or a Green or a tea partier or an independent cannot collect tens of thousands of signatures from a geographically distributed group of currently registered voters, registered in the correct party, etc. etc. no one cares.

But if incumbents and establishment politicians don't manage to get on the ballot under their own ballot access laws, designed to protect them from competition, everyone gets upset.

I had friends who collected signatures for Ed Clark, the 1980 Libertarian candidate, in West Virginia.  They needed to get signatures from every parish.  The ballot access laws referred to parishes.  The only maps of where the parishes were had burned up in a fire decades earlier.  That year, as many years, Libertarians had to stand in the cold or raise money and hire petitioners, using up all their funds and volunteers, just to make a good faith effort which combined with a law suit got them on a ballot.  Meanwhile, the Republicrats and Demopublicans are just waived on the ballot and then spend all their Wall Street donations on advertising and "walking around money" where they buy votes.
The Road to the 2012 Elections:

Please join us for a timely discussion about the GOP Primary ballot access problems that have lead to a majority of candidates not meeting the requirements to get on the ballot.  We will have this meet and greet discussion
next Wednesday evening on Jan 4, 2012.

We must not let this happen ever again.

RSVP below for this important analysis of what happened, the remedies sought and how we can prevent this kind of failure in the future.
